After I was reading an article about the dangers of mold here https://www.elementalasbestos.ca/2017/04/house-has-mold-what-now/, I wanted to dig into it a little myself. I knew that mold was not good for you and that you should not ignore it. However, I had never really dug into why it was bad and why it is so very important to deal with it as soon as possible. It is even more important to get rid of it if anyone in the house has any kind of medical issue, allergies, weaker immune systems or asthma. You also do not want to have play dates, friends or family over when there is mold in your house as then you are exposing them to the health hazards too. So, here is what I found during my search.
Where is mold?
For starters mold isn’t just the black stuff that you find around damp windows. It can be different colours and even invisible. It can hide in places that you may not think of it showing up. For example, places like cabinets, you would not necessarily think there could be mold. Other things like the shower curtains mildew grossness, also contains mold. Mold can be touched, ingested and inhaled depending on which form it is.
There are places in our home that we do tend to keep an eye on for mold, as we should at least be aware of the possibility of mold growing there due to the lack of ventilation. Bathrooms, basements, crawl spaces, attics and around the kitchen sink area, are all areas we tend to watch. But how many of us realize that mold can seep into the drywall and grow without our knowledge? Other things to look for is rust, paint that is peeling, discoloration of ceilings and grout, warped wood, leaking pipes or roofs, if you had flooding you need to watch the drywall, and watch windows for mold growth too.
What happens when we are exposed to mold?
The toxins from mold can cause our body’s central nervous system and our immune system to be affected. We may think something is the common cold or allergies, however, it is possible that it is a symptom of being exposed to mold. Other things that can happen are:
- Chronic sinus infections
- Increased depression
- Asthma complications
- Allergy symptoms
- Difficulty problem solving
- Lapses in memory
- Impulse control issues
- Difficulty concentrating
- Irritated throat
- Runny nose
- Itchy, watery eyes
As you can see, there are many things that can happen to our bodies when exposed to mold. Knowing all these symptoms that mold can produce has caused me to want to be sure that I am more diligent in keeping any mold growth down. Thankfully, there are companies out there, like Elemental Asbestos, that can help find any mold that is hidden in your home.
How to prevent mold
Once you have removed the mold from the home it will be easier to prevent it from coming back. Bleach has now become my friend. I use it to clean the bathroom and kitchen once in a while to help assure me that there isn’t mold growing. We also have installed better ventilation in our bathrooms. When we change our furnace filters, we are checking downstairs for any signs of mold growth. Why? Because we had found some hidden behind some boxes that we had stored in the closet. The box was pushed against the outside wall so there was no ventilation and mold was able to grow. So, now we are being more diligent to help protect our family and those who come to visit our home.
